The trout follow the salmon looking for an egg meal. No doubt there are some guys out quietly getting into some browns and steelhead in the smaller tribs. The forecast after the warmup for the end of week/beginning part of the weekend is back to cold temps with snow on the backside of the rain so the up and down, 2 3 day cycle will continue. From 9-mile point to the high rocks has been the most consistent producer for a lot of boats; as well as in front of the Salmon River. Well start out with a warmup and rain or showers then a quick transition to much colder and snow or snow showers Fri/Sat. On the west side of Shadigee just past Flat Top, they hit their first King and the further they went, the better it got. Crabs are working off 3-way rigs, as are Ned rigs and swim baits. Salmon are stacked up in Olcott Harbor and spinners are working for shore casters. Tough time of the year for any serious drying out since everything will wind up essentially as runoff. The Olcott pier project is completed for land lubbers there to get back out there or the Oak Orchard piers. Water color was stained with probably greater then a foot but less then 2 feet of viz. The Oswego Fire Department offers loaner life jackets at no charge through its Loaner for Life program. Shoreline casting action Apr and May for hungry brown trout. Check the Canal schedule for duration. Some crimson males and brighter hens are what anglers are finding nearer the dam and also in the overflow channel. Spring will offer up only so many cold water chances! Those waterways do seem to be slowly back on the retreat. No major icing that we are aware of. If you still have a boat in the water, you can fish west of Sodus Bay in 30 fow. Longer range forecast is chance of cold again after that with another snowstorm for end next week. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. So with light angling pressure in the Oak, a few drop backs, spawners and fresh fish have been encountered in the low and clear flows. Any emergency Canal drainage flows are now tempered and so that leaves tribs like the Oak and Sandy mostly to regular run of the river flows. Flows are dropping and clearing all around. Flows in the Oak still humming along at around slightly high and slightly stained. Also a few more brown trout hook ups have been reported, but its plenty earlier for that with lots of good trout action ahead of us. Leaf fall is underway so expect daily water level fluctuations thanks to turbine rack cleaning at the dam. Upstream swamp headwater supplies seem brim full so look for flows to be pretty well maintained and on a continued slow clearing. Welcome August!
